Why Ramadan costs more
Ramadan is the month when the most people want to perform Umrah, and the demand is heaviest in the last third of it. Many pilgrims choose Ramadan because it is reported in an authentic hadith, narrated in the collections of Bukhari and Muslim, that Umrah in Ramadan is equal in reward to Hajj. That is a statement about reward and not a ruling on whether you should go in Ramadan, and it is the reason demand spikes.
The supply side does not move. The hotels within walking distance of the Haram cannot be added to, so when every operator wants the same rooms and the same flights in the same weeks, prices rise. Operators say much of the rise is a simple matter of supply and demand, and that those who book early benefit most.
Which costs rise the most
- Hotels near the Haram rise the most. A Khaleej Times analysis reported that hotel prices may double during Ramadan and can triple in the last ten days, especially for the properties closest to the Haram.
- Flights rise less consistently. A report from Kuwait put the increase in flight costs at 40 percent in mid-Ramadan, while a Skyscanner figure for the UAE put fares from the UAE to Jeddah at AED 900 to 1,300 in the weeks leading up to Ramadan and up to AED 2,700 in the last ten days.
- Packages combine both. One UAE operator quoted a five-star triple room near the mosque at about AED 2,700 per person when booked in January, rising to AED 3,900 to 4,000 for Ramadan bookings, and described last-ten-day packages of AED 5,000 to more than AED 8,000.
These figures come from operator quotes and news reports across different countries and years, so treat them as the pattern and not as a price list. The consistent finding is that the Haram-side hotel is the main driver.
The Pakistan picture
| When you travel | Package price per person | How it compares |
|---|---|---|
| Outside Ramadan | PKR 220,000 to 300,000 | The baseline |
| First twenty nights of Ramadan | PKR 400,000 to 600,000 | Roughly double |
| Last ten nights of Ramadan | PKR 600,000 to 800,000 or more | Roughly two to three times or more |
The pattern fits the reports above: the jump between ordinary weeks and the first twenty nights is large, and the last ten nights are larger again. If you can only choose one change to make, moving from the last ten nights to anywhere else saves the most.
What the calculator estimates for the same trip
The calculator on this site models the season by raising flights and hotels only, because the visa, insurance and operator fee do not change with the date. For one pilgrim travelling economy for ten nights from Pakistan, it estimates PKR 343,300 outside Ramadan, PKR 458,300 in the first twenty nights and PKR 642,300 in the last ten nights.
| Season | Flights | Hotels | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outside Ramadan | PKR 130,000 | PKR 100,000 | PKR 343,300 |
| First twenty nights | PKR 195,000 | PKR 150,000 | PKR 458,300 |
| Last ten nights | PKR 299,000 | PKR 230,000 | PKR 642,300 |
These are planning estimates that apply a simple multiplier, so they are not forecasts for any particular date. Real prices depend on the airline, the hotel and the day you book, and are usually quoted higher the closer you get.

- Book early. Seats and rooms near the Haram are filled first, and prices rise quickly as the month approaches.
- Avoid the last ten nights if you can. Early Ramadan or the weeks around it are noticeably cheaper than the final stretch.
- Weigh hotel distance against price. A hotel further from the Haram with reliable transport can cost far less than one next door.
- Look at the length of stay. Hotels and food are charged per night, so a shorter stay lowers the total.
- Compare more than one operator, and compare them on what is included, not the headline price.
- Start saving early. Ramadan is expected around February 2027, depending on the moon sighting, so there is time to plan if you start now.
When not to cut corners
The Haram is extremely crowded in Ramadan, and the last ten nights are the busiest of the year. If you are travelling with elderly parents, young children or someone with health problems, a hotel close to the Haram is a matter of safety and comfort, not luxury. Weigh that before choosing the cheapest option, and consider travelling outside Ramadan so that you can afford the better arrangement.
