8 and 80 vs. 12-Hour Shifts for Nurses: Which Pays More?

How the articles here are written

A calculator gives you a number. These articles explain when that number is the right one, by setting two methods against each other on the same hours and the same pay rate. They are written for employees who want to check a pay stub and for the people who run payroll for a small employer.

  • Every rule is taken from a primary source, such as a federal regulation or a Department of Labor fact sheet, and each article lists them with the date they were last checked.
  • Every pay figure is computed with the same engine as the matching calculator, so an article and its tool cannot disagree, and the arithmetic is shown line by line.
  • Each article links to the calculator that does the sum for your own hours, and the calculator links back to the article that compares the rules.

State law can change a federal result, and the articles say so where it does. They explain rules and show arithmetic. They do not decide whether a particular employer has paid you correctly.

Articles are general information, not legal, tax or payroll advice, and the figures are estimates. See the disclaimer. Last updated .
