How to Save for Hajj or Umrah on Any Income

In short

Take a realistic target from a current quote, subtract what you have already saved, and divide the rest by the months until you want to travel. For example, PKR 1,200,000 over 60 months is PKR 20,000 a month. Set that amount aside on the day you are paid, review it every quarter, and update the target whenever you get a real quote.

Step 1: set a realistic target

A plan is only as good as its target. For Umrah from Pakistan, a published 2026 guide puts the full trip at PKR 220,000 to PKR 500,000 or more. For Hajj under the Pakistan government scheme, the cost was announced as an estimated PKR 1,150,000 to PKR 1,250,000 per pilgrim, with a long package of 38 to 42 days and a short one of 20 to 25 days.

The calculator on this site starts from PKR 343,300 for a ten-night economy Umrah and PKR 1,268,000 for an economy Hajj from Pakistan. Use them as a placeholder until you have a written quote, then replace them. A wrong target does more harm than a rough one, because you only find out when it is too late to adjust.

Step 2: choose a timeline and see the monthly amount

The monthly amount is the remaining cost divided by the number of months. The tables use the calculator’s starting totals and assume you have saved nothing yet, so subtract your current savings from the target first if you have some.

Step 3: check the amount against your income

The question is not whether the total feels large but whether the monthly amount fits. A common test is to ask what share of your take-home pay it takes. If it takes more than you can keep up, lengthen the timeline instead of dropping the plan.

What a monthly saving is as a share of take-home pay
Monthly savingIf you take home PKR 60,000If you take home PKR 100,000If you take home PKR 150,000

PKR 20,00033%20%13%
PKR 30,00050%30%20%

A longer timeline is almost always better than a bigger monthly amount that you cannot sustain. Missing months breaks the habit, and a habit is what actually reaches the target.

Step 4: make saving automatic

  • Move the amount into a separate account on the day you are paid, before you spend anything.
  • Use a standing instruction with your bank so it happens without a decision each month.
  • Keep the money apart from your daily account so it is not part of your spending picture.
  • Review the plan every three months against your target and your timeline.
  • Put one-off money, such as a bonus or a refund, towards the target instead of spending it.

If your income is irregular

Traders, farmers and daily-wage earners cannot always put the same amount aside each month. In that case save a fixed percentage of every payment you receive instead of a fixed amount. Take five or ten percent of each sale or each harvest into the savings account the same day, and add more in strong months. Check the total every quarter against the monthly figure from the table to see whether you are ahead or behind.

Saving as a family

The cost multiplies by the number of pilgrims, so a couple needs twice the target. If you are planning for two, enter two pilgrims in the calculator and look at the monthly amount for both together. Some families spread the cost by planning Umrah first and Hajj later. Who goes and when is a decision for your family and, where needed, a qualified scholar.

What this guide does not cover

This guide is about the money only. Whether Hajj is currently obligatory for you, and how to treat savings and debts when deciding, are questions for a qualified scholar. It is not financial advice either: it does not recommend where to keep savings, and it does not allow for inflation, profit or currency changes, which can move the real cost between now and your travel date.

Common questions

How do I pay for the Pakistan government Hajj scheme?
The dues are paid in two installments at designated banks, according to the schedule announced by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Check the ministry’s current announcement for the amounts and dates, because they change each year.
What if I cannot keep up the monthly amount?
Lengthen the timeline and recalculate. A smaller amount you can sustain beats a larger one you stop paying.
Should I plan for Umrah first?
It is one way to spread the cost. Umrah costs a fraction of Hajj and can be done at any time of year. The decision is yours, and a scholar can advise on your own situation.
Does the monthly figure include inflation?
No. It divides the target by the months. Prices tend to rise, so update the target when you get a new quote.
