How to use it
- Choose what to count: paragraphs, sentences, words, characters or list items, and type how many.
- Pick the word bank: classic Latin, plain English, Arabic or Urdu. Tick the classic opening “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” for Latin.
- Choose the format: plain text, HTML, Markdown or JSON. For HTML or Markdown you can add headings, and for lists you can number them.
- Set the sentence and paragraph length if the defaults are not right. Keep the seed to get the same text again, or change it for new text.
- Press Copy, or download the text as a file.
How it calculates
Sentences are built from a word bank, chosen with a seeded random generator, so the same seed and settings always give the same text. A sentence has the number of words you set, never repeats the word before, and has a comma part-way if it is long. A paragraph has the number of sentences you set. For an exact number of characters, whole sentences are added while there is room and a last sentence is built word by word to land on the exact count, spaces and the full stop included. Words and characters in the result are counted from the text shown.
For example, one paragraph of classic lorem ipsum begins “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.” and runs to 68 words. Asking for 160 characters returns 160 exactly, the length of a typical meta description, and 25 words returns 25. Using the same seed again returns the identical text, and a new seed returns different text. The text is placeholder only; it has no meaning.
Who should use it
- Designers and developers filling a layout, template or test page
- Anyone who needs text of a precise length to test a field, a card or a database column
- People testing right-to-left layouts in Arabic or Urdu
- Teachers and writers who need dummy text for an exercise
Who should not use this
- Anyone publishing a page: placeholder text must be replaced with real content before launch, because a page of dummy text gives readers nothing
- Anyone who needs meaningful sample content, such as realistic names, addresses or product descriptions; this makes meaningless filler
Limitations
- The Latin text is a word bank in the style of lorem ipsum, not the original passage, so the sentences are random and have no meaning.
- The English, Arabic and Urdu banks are common words picked at random. The sentences are not grammatical and should never be shown to readers as real text.
- Limits per request are 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences, 10,000 words, 100,000 characters or 200 list items, so the page stays fast.
- Exact-length text counts characters as a reader sees them, which for these word banks is the same as the number of letters, spaces and marks.
- Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server. Clearing your browser data also removes the saved profile.
