Text, date & developer tools

Last updated

Five small tools for the jobs that come up every week. The character counter checks a post, a title or a text message against each platform’s limit. The lorem ipsum generator fills a layout with placeholder text of the exact length you need. The date calculator counts the days between two dates or adds days, months and years to a date. The regex tester tries a regular expression on sample text and explains it in plain English. The ping test times your connection to servers around the world.

Everything runs in your browser. The first four never send what you type anywhere. The ping test is different by nature: it has to contact servers, so it only contacts the fixed list shown on the page, and it says so. Each page says what it counts, how, and where it can be wrong.

The 5 tools

Which one do you need?

  • You want to know if a post, caption, title or text message is within its limit: Character counter
  • You need placeholder text for a design, a template or a test: Lorem ipsum generator
  • You want the days between two dates, or the date a number of days or months away: Date calculator
  • You are writing or fixing a regular expression and want to see what it matches: Regex tester
  • You want to check your latency, jitter and packet loss, or find the nearest region: Ping test

Guides that explain the rules behind these tools

Each guide is written around a question people really ask, shows its working and names its sources.

  • Social media character limits: A table of 2026 character limits for the main platforms, SMS and search results, how emoji, links and non-Latin text are counted, and how to check text before you post.
  • What is lorem ipsum?: Where lorem ipsum comes from, what it says, why designers use it, when real copy is better, and how to generate text of the right length, in HTML, or for right-to-left layouts.
  • Regex cheat sheet: The syntax of regular expressions, the flags, groups and replacements, tested example patterns, the mistakes behind the usual errors, and where Python, Java, PCRE and Go differ from JavaScript.
  • How to calculate days between dates: The method for counting days, months and years between dates, whether to count the end date, what happens at month ends and leap years, and the matching formulas for spreadsheets and databases.
  • What is a good ping?: What ping measures, the numbers that are good for calls, games and streaming, why the average hides jitter and loss, how distance sets a floor, and how to test and lower your ping.

Before you rely on a result

The tools in this group make documents and estimates from the figures you type. They are not legal, tax, accounting or religious advice, and they cannot know your contract, your local rules or your circumstances. Every tool page says who should not use it and where it can be wrong, names the sources behind any rule it applies, and shows the date it was last updated. If a figure will be filed, signed or paid, have it checked by a qualified person first. Read the disclaimer and the editorial policy, and report a mistake through the contact page.
