How do you convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by the number of hours you are paid for in a year. For a standard full-time job that is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, or 2,080 hours. A $60,000 salary divided by 2,080 is $28.85 an hour. The reverse is a multiplication: an hourly rate times 2,080 is the yearly pay, so $30.00 an hour is $62,400.
| Hours a week | Hours a year | Hourly rate |
|---|---|---|
| 40 hours | 2,080 | $28.85 |
| 37.5 hours | 1,950 | $30.77 |
| 35 hours | 1,820 | $32.97 |
| 30 hours | 1,560 | $38.46 |
The fewer hours the salary covers, the higher the hourly rate it works out to. That is why two jobs with the same salary are not always the same pay per hour: a 37.5-hour week is paid more per hour than a 40-hour week at the same yearly figure.
Salary to hourly conversion table, $30,000 to $150,000
Each row is a yearly salary turned into pay for every common pay period. Hourly uses 2,080 hours. Weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly and monthly divide the year by 52, 26, 24 and 12. Everything is gross pay, before any tax or deduction.

Hourly to annual salary table, $12 to $60 an hour
Multiply an hourly rate by 2,080 to get the yearly figure. $15 an hour is $31,200 a year, $20 is $41,600 and $25 is $52,000. The table gives the other periods too. It assumes you are paid for every one of the 2,080 hours, with no unpaid time off and no overtime.

What is $50,000, $60,000, $70,000 or $80,000 a year per hour?
| Annual salary | Hourly | Weekly | Biweekly | Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $24.04 | $961.54 | $1,923.08 | $4,166.67 |
| $60,000 | $28.85 | $1,153.85 | $2,307.69 | $5,000.00 |
| $70,000 | $33.65 | $1,346.15 | $2,692.31 | $5,833.33 |
| $80,000 | $38.46 | $1,538.46 | $3,076.92 | $6,666.67 |
$60,000 a year is $28.85 an hour, $1,153.85 a week and $5,000.00 a month. $70,000 is $33.65 an hour, and $80,000 is $38.46. These are gross figures. Income tax, Social Security and Medicare come out of them, so the amount that reaches your account is lower. The annual salary calculator estimates take-home pay with the 2026 federal rates.
Annual salary calculatorChange the hours, paid weeks and state rate, and see take-home pay for any salary.Does unpaid time off change the hourly rate?
Yes, if the salary does not pay for those weeks. A $60,000 contract that pays for 50 weeks, with two unpaid, covers 50 × 40 = 2,000 hours, so the rate is $30.00 an hour rather than $28.85. Paid vacation and paid holidays do not lower the rate, because you are paid for those hours. Only unpaid weeks do.
The same applies to a school-year or seasonal contract. Divide by the hours you are actually paid for, or by the hours you actually work if you want the real rate per hour of work. The second figure is always higher, because paid time off is paid but not worked.
Why does the hourly equivalent matter for overtime?
Overtime is paid per hour, so the hourly rate is what the multiplier applies to. Hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at not less than one and a half times the regular rate for employees the Fair Labor Standards Act covers and does not exempt. Many salaried employees are exempt from overtime, but being paid a salary does not by itself make someone exempt. The duties and salary level tests decide it, and the Department of Labor explains them.
For a non-exempt employee on a salary of $60,000 who works 45 hours in a week, the regular rate for that week depends on what the salary is meant to cover. Where it covers 40 hours, the rate is $28.85 and the 5 overtime hours earn an extra half-time premium. The overtime calculator and the time and a half calculator do the arithmetic.
Time and a half calculatorTurn an hourly equivalent into the time and a half rate. How much is each paycheck?
Divide the annual salary by the number of paychecks. Biweekly pay has 26 paychecks, so $60,000 pays $2,307.69 gross each time. Semi-monthly pay has 24, so each check is $2,500.00. Weekly pay has 52 and monthly 12. Some years a biweekly schedule has 27 paydays; the salary is still split into 26 equal checks, and the extra payday is a month with a third paycheck. The 2027 payroll calendar shows which schedule that affects.
Common salary to hourly mistakes
Most wrong conversions come from the number of hours or the number of pay periods.
- Using 40 hours when the job is paid for 37.5 or 35.
- Dividing by 12 months and then by 4 weeks, which gives 48 weeks, not 52.
- Treating a gross figure as take-home pay.
- Ignoring unpaid weeks in a contract.
- Dividing a biweekly paycheck by 40, which is the hours in one week, not two. Divide by 80.
- Assuming a salary means no overtime.
How do you convert hourly to monthly salary and monthly salary to hourly?
To convert an hourly wage to a monthly salary, multiply the rate by 2,080 and divide by 12, which is the same as multiplying by 173.33 hours a month. $20 an hour is $41,600 a year and $3,466.67 a month. To convert a monthly salary to an hourly rate, multiply by 12 and divide by 2,080: $4,000 a month is $23.08 an hour. Per hour to per year is the same step: multiply by 2,080.
| Hourly wage | Monthly salary | Yearly salary |
|---|---|---|
| $15.00 | $2,600.00 | $31,200 |
| $18.00 | $3,120.00 | $37,440 |
| $20.00 | $3,466.67 | $41,600 |
| $23.00 | $3,986.67 | $47,840 |
| $25.00 | $4,333.33 | $52,000 |
| $30.00 | $5,200.00 | $62,400 |
| $35.00 | $6,066.67 | $72,800 |
| $40.00 | $6,933.33 | $83,200 |
| Monthly salary | Hourly wage | Yearly salary |
|---|---|---|
| $2,500 | $14.42 | $30,000 |
| $3,000 | $17.31 | $36,000 |
| $3,500 | $20.19 | $42,000 |
| $4,000 | $23.08 | $48,000 |
| $5,000 | $28.85 | $60,000 |
| $6,000 | $34.62 | $72,000 |
| $7,000 | $40.38 | $84,000 |
| $8,000 | $46.15 | $96,000 |
These conversions assume 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. A pay scale that quotes a salary per hour for a different year length gives a different figure; divide by the hours you are actually paid for.

Every figure on this page is calculated, not typed, from one rule: a standard year is 52 weeks of 40 hours, which is 2,080 hours. Hourly pay is the annual figure divided by the hours; weekly is the annual figure divided by 52, biweekly by 26, semi-monthly by 24 and monthly by 12. Results are rounded to the cent and are gross pay before tax. A job that pays for fewer weeks or hours, or an employer that uses a different year, gives different hourly figures; the tables for other weekly hours show how much. The annual salary calculator on this site lets you change the hours.
