How to use the hours to minutes calculator
- Choose what you have: decimal hours, hours and minutes, total minutes or a list of times.
- Type the time. In a list, write each as 7:30, 7h 30m, 45m or 1.5 and start a line with a minus to subtract.
- Pick a rounding rule and enter an hourly rate if you want the pay.
- Read the minutes, decimal hours and clock time, then copy or print the result.
How do you convert hours to minutes?
Hours are converted through minutes. Decimal hours times 60 is minutes, and minutes divided by 60 is decimal hours, held at full precision and shown to two and four places. Hours and minutes are shown by rounding to the nearest whole minute. A list of times is added in minutes first, with a minus subtracting, and converted once at the end so rounding does not build up. Rounding follows 29 CFR 785.48(b): to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth of an hour (6 minutes) or quarter hour, where a remainder of half the unit or more rounds up; for the quarter hour that is the 7-minute rule, 1 to 7 minutes down and 8 to 14 up.
For example, 2.5 hours is 2.5 × 60 = 150 minutes, and 3 hours 20 minutes is 3 × 60 + 20 = 200 minutes. Going the other way, 90 minutes is 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5 hours. Rounded to the quarter hour with the 7-minute rule, 8 hours 8 minutes counts as 8 hours 15 minutes and 8 hours 7 minutes as 8 hours. The times are made up; yours come from what you type.
Who should use the hours to minutes calculator
- Anyone converting hours to minutes or back for a schedule, bill or time card
- Payroll staff and employees checking a total in hours and minutes
- Anyone adding a column of time entries and wanting the sum in minutes and decimals
Who should not use this
- Anyone who needs the date or clock time of an event; use the date calculator or the military time converter
- Anyone deciding what counts as hours worked; this tool only converts the time you give it
- Anyone who needs a legal opinion on rounding policy
Limitations
- Rounding is shown as a rule would apply it. Whether an employer’s rounding policy is lawful depends on whether it averages out over time, which one entry cannot show.
- The tool converts time; it does not decide what counts as hours worked, such as meal periods, travel or waiting time.
- Pay is hours times the rate you enter, before tax, overtime and deductions.
- Results are estimates, not legal, tax, payroll or financial advice.
- Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server. Clearing your browser data also removes the saved profile.
How do you convert hours to minutes?
Multiply the hours by 60. Two and a half hours is 2.5 × 60 = 150 minutes, three hours is 180 minutes and a quarter hour is 0.25 × 60 = 15 minutes. The rule never changes, because an hour is always 60 minutes, so the same multiplication works for any amount.
If you have hours and minutes together, such as 3 hours 20 minutes, multiply only the hours and then add the minutes: 3 × 60 + 20 = 200 minutes. To convert back, divide minutes by 60: 200 ÷ 60 = 3.33 decimal hours, which is 3 hours 20 minutes.

The middle column is what you want for a calculation. The right-hand column is how a clock reads. A decimal such as 7.5 hours is exactly 7:30 on a clock, but a decimal such as 7.3 is not 7:30, as the next section shows.
Why 8.30 hours is not 8 hours 30 minutes
A decimal point in hours counts tenths and hundredths of an hour, not minutes. So 8.30 hours is 8 hours and 0.30 of an hour, and 0.30 × 60 = 18 minutes, which is 8:18. To write 8 hours 30 minutes in decimals you need 8.5. Mixing the two is one of the most common timesheet mistakes, and it shifts pay by the difference.
| Typed as decimal hours | What it really is on a clock | Clock time it is mistaken for |
|---|---|---|
| 8.30 | 8:18 | 8:30 |
| 8.45 | 8:27 | 8:45 |
| 7.15 | 7:09 | 7:15 |
| 6.50 | 6:30 | 6:50 |

How do you convert minutes to hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 90 minutes is 90 ÷ 60 = 1.50 hours, which is 1 hour 30 minutes. 45 minutes is 0.75 hour. 20 minutes is 20 ÷ 60 = 0.3333, usually written 0.33 on a time card. To show the answer as hours and minutes, take the whole number of hours and keep the remainder as minutes: 135 minutes is 2 hours with 15 left over, or 2:15.

|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0.00 | 30 | 0.50 |

What does a block of time pay?
Pay is the hourly rate times decimal hours. At $20 an hour, 150 minutes (2.5 hours) pays $50.00, and 20 minutes pays $6.67. A work week of 37:50 on the sample card below is 37.83 hours, which pays $756.67 at the same rate.
| Day | Hours and minutes | Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 7:30 | 450 | 7.50 |
| Tuesday | 8:15 | 495 | 8.25 |
| Wednesday | 6:45 | 405 | 6.75 |
| Thursday | 8:00 | 480 | 8.00 |
| Friday | 7:20 | 440 | 7.33 |
| Total | 37:50 | 2,270 | 37.83 |
Can an employer round time to the quarter hour?
Yes, within a federal limit. Under 29 CFR 785.48(b), an employer may record start and stop times to the nearest 5 minutes, the nearest tenth of an hour or the nearest quarter hour, as long as the practice averages out so employees are fully paid for the time they work. The common 7-minute rule rounds 1 to 7 minutes down and 8 to 14 minutes up to the next quarter hour. A rule that always rounds in the employer’s favor does not meet that test.

How do you convert hours and minutes in a spreadsheet?
A spreadsheet stores a time as a fraction of a day, so one hour is 1/24. That is why multiplying a time by 24 gives hours and by 1,440 gives minutes. The formulas below work in Excel and Google Sheets.
| What you want | Formula | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Time in a cell (7:30) to decimal hours | =A2*24 | Format the result cell as Number, not Time |
| Time in a cell to total minutes | =A2*1440 | A day has 1,440 minutes |
| Decimal hours (7.5) to a time you can format | =A2/24 | Format as [h]:mm so totals past 24 hours show |
| Hours and minutes in separate cells to decimal | =A2+B2/60 | A2 is hours, B2 is minutes |
| Text such as 7:30 to decimal hours | =TIMEVALUE(A2)*24 | Works when the cell holds text, not a time |
