What is overtime for $18 an hour?
Overtime for $18 an hour is $27.00 an hour. Federal law requires time and a half, 1.5 times the regular rate, for hours over 40 in a workweek, so the overtime rate is $18 × 1.5 = $27.00. That is $9.00 more for each overtime hour than the regular $18. Where a state requires double time, as California does after 12 hours in a day, the rate is $18 × 2 = $36.00.
A 45-hour week at $18 an hour pays 40 × $18 + 5 × $27.00 = $855.00 before tax. Without the overtime premium the same 45 hours would pay only $810.00, so the premium adds $45.00.

What does regular overtime add to a year at $18 an hour?
Working 40 hours at $18 an hour all year is $37,440 before tax. Five overtime hours every week adds $7,020 and brings the gross to $44,460. The take-home column is for a single filer under 2026 federal rules with no state income tax; overtime is taxed as ordinary wages, and the extra dollars can fall in a higher bracket than the first ones.
| Overtime | Gross a year | Overtime pay | Take-home a year | Take-home every 2 weeks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| None (40 hours) | $37,440 | $0 | $32,263 | $1,240.89 |
| 2 hours a week | $40,248 | $2,808 | $34,519 | $1,327.66 |
| 5 hours a week | $44,460 | $7,020 | $37,904 | $1,457.83 |
| 8 hours a week | $48,672 | $11,232 | $41,288 | $1,588.00 |
| 10 hours a week | $51,480 | $14,040 | $43,544 | $1,674.78 |
How does a bonus change overtime at $18 an hour?
A non-discretionary bonus, one promised or tied to hours, output or attendance, is part of the regular rate. Add it to the week’s pay and divide by all hours worked. For example, a $100 attendance bonus in a 45-hour week at $18 an hour gives a regular rate of (45 × $18 + $100) ÷ 45 = $20.22. The extra half-time premium for the 5 overtime hours is $20.22 × 0.5 × 5 = $50.55, so total pay is $910.00 straight time plus the premium, or $960.55.
A bonus given entirely at the employer’s discretion, with no promise, is left out. Whether a bonus counts depends on how it is described and paid, not on its name. The overtime rate guide lists what is and is not included in the regular rate.
How is overtime paid at $18 an hour in California?
California counts overtime by the day as well as the week. Under Labor Code section 510, hours over 8 in a day, up to 12, are paid at time and a half, hours over 12 are paid at double time, and a worker who works 7 days in a row is paid time and a half for the first 8 hours on the seventh day and double time after that. Hours over 40 in a week also earn time and a half. A 13-hour day at $18 an hour pays 8 × $18 + 4 × $27.00 + 1 × $36.00 = $288.00.
| Hours in the day | Regular hours | Time and a half hours | Double time hours | Pay for the day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 hours | 8 | 0 | 0 | $144.00 |
| 9 hours | 8 | 1 | 0 | $171.00 |
| 10 hours | 8 | 2 | 0 | $198.00 |
| 11 hours | 8 | 3 | 0 | $225.00 |
| 12 hours | 8 | 4 | 0 | $252.00 |
| 13 hours | 8 | 4 | 1 | $288.00 |
| 14 hours | 8 | 4 | 2 | $324.00 |
The table covers one ordinary day. The weekly 40-hour test, the seventh-day rule and any alternative workweek schedule can change it, and a state or city minimum wage may be higher than the wage used here. Other states differ, and many follow the federal weekly rule only.
